MaaS Global won the Smart City Action award 2016 for its Whim mobility app at the Helsinki Smart City event on the 29th of September 2016. The event, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of Forum Virium Helsinki, took place in Helsinki City Hall.

The Helsinki Smart City event brought together key players and visionaries for smart cities. The event gave a glimpse into the future, which will require daring new initiatives and ideas from Helsinki and Finland. The collective aim is to develop Finland as a global test environment for creating tomorrow’s smarter and more functional cities.

“The concrete vision of smart Helsinki is to give an hour of extra time to the city’s residents every day. The winners are all great examples of actions that make this vision come true,” says the chairman of the jury, Forum Virium Helsinki’s Managing Director Mika Malin.

MaaS Global’s innovative smart city application, Whim, was seen as a trailblazer for urban mobility. The MaaS (Mobility as a Service) based app, which will be launched this autumn in the Helsinki region, will revolutionise the way people move around cities. It gives access to a wide variety of transport options with a single monthly fee.

“Many people have already heard of the MaaS concept, but this is one of the first opportunities to test it out in real life. We want to recognise this bold and admirable foray into new territory. Whim lets the residents of the Helsinki region to try the service out before anyone else in the world,” jury member Veera Mustonen from Forum Virium Helsinki explains.

Sampo Hietanen, the father of the MaaS concept and the CEO of MaaS Global was delighted to receive the award.

“We’re driven to work harder than ever to create the smart cities of the future. This award proves that we’re definitely moving in the right direction.”
