MaaS Global, the first MaaS (mobility-as-a-service) operator in the world and Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., one of the largest property developers in the world, will launch a joint operation to integrate mobility services with real estate in Japan.  The aim is to provide residents of Mitsui Fudosan’s properties an easy-to-use subscription-based model for their everyday mobility needs. Combining two major industries, real estate and transportation, presents enormous business opportunities.

MaaS Global’s award-winning Whim-app provides easy access to bike share, car share, buses and taxis. These services will be provided by local partners e.g. Docomo Bike Share Inc., Tobu Bus East Co., Ltd. and Careco Car Sharing Club. Val Laboratory Corporation will provide transit route search and Adishplus Co., Ltd is the customer care partner. During the pilot, MaaS Global will collect information on how residents are using different transportation modes in several of Mitsui Fudosan’s residential buildings in Tokyo and Kashiwanoha.

– This year, we have combined mobility services with real estate in Europe. Now we are working closely with our partner and investor Mitsui Fudosan and piloting a whole new product category which is not available in our other markets. In Tokyo and Kashiwanoha, Whim service is developed in collaboration with property owners, local residents and organizations. Our aim is to integrate mobility services with real estate and provide easy to use MaaS services for the residents, says Sampo Hietanen, CEO of MaaS Global.

MaaS Global is the first MaaS (mobility-as-a-service) operator in the world and was founded in Finland. Finland, which has also been named as the world’s happiest country, and Japan have a lot in common – a culture that respects the others and a serious and hard working personality of people – but also an ageing population, decline of public transportation in rural areas due to depopulation and congestion in the cities. MaaS Global’s Whim app will provide freedom of mobility for everyone, including the senior citizens. It provides a way to lead a happy and hassle-free life, without the need for a private car.

– We are thrilled to start this joint operation with Mitsui Fudosan. One of the main reasons why we are in Japan is Mitsui Fudosan’s willingness to bring the MaaS concept to their country. We also have strong support from the local transportation operators. They all have an interest in being part of the future mobility and smart city movement, says Hietanen.

– We think that the Japanese market is a great environment to expand our MaaS solutions further. Japan has technical readiness and outstanding transportation services, especially public transportation. Japanese people are also forerunners in using technology and appreciate the ease that technology brings to their day-to-day lives. This pilot is a step towards what MaaS really should and could be. Other countries are looking closely to learn how the Japanese are doing this, he concludes.

Through this collaboration, we were able to start the first full-scale real estate x MaaS demonstration experiment in Japan. We will be able to provide users with an unprecedented experience value, starting from the residents in our condominiums. We are also delighted with this initiative to deepen our relationship with MaaS Global, which has been driving innovation in the MaaS world since its inception, and we look forward to accelerating real estate innovation, says Takashi Sunaga, General Manager of Business Innovation Planning Department at Mitsui Fudosan.
